What are the Main Types of Brake Pads?

Your braking system is a complex network that runs from the brake pedal to the brake pads at the other end. The brake pads stop your vehicle by creating friction between the pads and your brake rotors, which are metallic discs attached directly to the vehicle wheels.

Brake pads come in three basic varieties, including:

  • Sintered Brake Pads: Sintered brake pads are formed from particles of metal that are forced together under great heat and pressure. Sintered pads provide exceptional grip under all sorts of weather conditions.
  • Ceramic Brake Pads: Ceramic pads are formed from particles of ceramic materials bound together with resins and metal flakes. Ceramic pads are known for their heat tolerance and durability.
  • Organic Brake Pads: Organic pads are made from fibers like Aramid, fillers, and adhesives. Organic pads ablate easily, a feature that helps to preserve rotors.
